Military men and women can make Valentine's Day a day to remember

GILBERT, AZ - Our Valley military men and women are getting the chance to celebrate this Valentine’s Day.

Chapel at the Farm in Gilbert is offering free weddings and vow renewals for those on active duty.

“It’s all about support and love,” said Reverend Amy Miller. “It’s such a great day and I think it’s just a fantastic way to be a forever valentine.”

The free ceremony is for the Simply Charming Chapel Wedding with up to 12 guests.

Liberty Market will provide cupcakes for the bride and groom. Free photographs of the ceremony will be captured by Moments in Film.

“You don’t really see the underlying feelings of fear or trepidation because they’re getting ready to leave. They’re just in the moment and it’s beautiful,” said photographer Jacquelyn Phillips.

My First Bridal Session

Beyond promotional pieces, I've never done a real bridal session. For most of us wearing the wedding dress before the wedding is unheard of. For the frugal ones like myself- isn't that what the photographer is supposed to do the day of the wedding.

Amy's session took place because she had an amazing gown, that would not fit her soon to be daughter arriving this spring. But it does lend itself to the idea of scheduling a bridal session the day of the wedding.

After the hair and make-up and before the events of the wedding and reception. Just putting aside an extra 15-30 min to slow down and take some really amazing photographs in your wedding dress. There's something to be said for documenting the second most outward symbol of your wedding besides your rings and as much as is invested in this one garment, it certainly deserves more than 10 quick shots before moving onto bridal party photos.

The Lindauers

A double congratulations to CJ and Jen, not only for their wedding, but shortly there after they found out they are expecting too!

The Lindauers were married at Sun City Grand community center in the theme of "Sweet I Do's" with an abundance of pinks, flowers and sweets- like the too tempting cookie bar. I had to avoid that side of the room the cookies were so so good.

I'd also like to take a moment to congratulate Jen on all her hard work to become a healthier individual. Her hard work and dedication paid off in spades and she was a truly stunning bride, beautiful inside and out!

James & Christa

Like usual, I'm behind on posts, so like tomatoes falling from the high dive- Ketch up

James & Christa had a lovely fall wedding at Virginia's House in Glendale, Az. The historic home provided the perfect backdrop for their sun drenched nuptials. The couple, who had been together for the better part of a decade finally decided to tie the knot and surrounded by their family, friends and many of James's co-workers, they celebrated with fancy cheeses, spiderman chocolate cake and hobbles from Germany that playfully found their way into a host of images.

Congratulations to you both and thank you for welcoming us to your event like family.

Joe, Lindsay and their Save the Date

Joe & Lindsay met in the dorms at ASU, and between books, cram sessions and a handful of dates. Love blossomed and this summer they are getting married!

The oh-so adorably cute couple returned to their alma mater for some uber-cozy and romantic photographs. Cuddling and kissing on the steps of Hayden library to walking hand in hand toward the dorms where they first met.

I was fortunate enough to have the distinct privilege to design their save the date, and I hope their guests love it as much as I do :)

Sim & Calvin's Engagement

Cal & Sim are about to be married in a few weeks at one of the most hidden treasures in the valley- the Japanese Friendship Garden. I'm terribly excited to be shooting at the gardens, it's been a few years, and I'd likely give a left foot or at least a knee cap to shoot there year round. But I digress....:)

We spent roughly an hour just walking along downtown Tempe, the park, the lake and Mill ave. The best part being the 36" latex balloon that garnered lots of attention and was a really fun prop. Both being relatively quite, Sim's ideas for props were not only tons of fun, but really added a level of comfort and created playfulness I hadn't seen between them before.

Here are just a couple from their fantastic session. I can't wait for the wedding!

Photo Booth....two sides to the prospect

I have now photographed 5 different weddings with photo booths. Let me explain the pros and cons and possibly help you make a decision that can save you money and a huge headache.

Photo booths are fun, exciting and novel ways to spice up a reception- these work well for dry weddings (no alcohol), weddings with a small number of guests and to fill up reception time if you're not choosing to do a garter and bouquet toss or any special dances.

That being said...These are things I've experienced seeing how they affect a reception. The bride is no longer the center of attention- sure she's gorgeous, but you can't play with her, the booth now becomes the pretty shiny thing that is a distraction. Guests will not leave the photo booth to watch you cut your cake or dance with your dad. Guests will choose a photo booth over dancing to the music you're paying your dj to play. And most importantly there are parts of your guests you don't want to see and daring someone after a few tasty beverages can quickly turn a photo booth into a skin fest with pictures you're certainly never going to want to see again.

Personally, I have found, with a handful of fun props made available during open dancing in your reception, you can still get great quality photo booth style photos with only a tenth of the cost.

Catching up & Exciting News

Wow, the last 2 weeks have been a whirlwind of last minute engagement sessions, wedding preparations, holiday photo bookings and more.

We here at Moments in Film could not be more excited for wedding season to get here. It's the equivalent of Christmas- we're checking out lists, I'm anal retentive- I check them twice. Some of our brides are making naughty gifts for their grooms, the new photo booth and video look nice. And all my little helpers are buzzing around the office making sure the coffee maker is working, the snack drawer is stocked for mass editing and the rhapsody playlist is rocking.

Shawnie & Justin

I had the good fortune to be found by Shawnie back in late August, she was in town visiting her dad and wanted to do her engagement photos in a desert location- something far different from the lush and dense wooded pavilion she will be wed at in Washington next September.

The session started in her dad's backyard and when we exercised almost every square inch of his fabulously designed backyard we took his vette out for a spin to Anthem Park (great place for family session) and these were just a few of my favorites.

We're still in the running to travel up north to photograph this fabulous couple, and fingers crossed I will be posting their wedding photos here, this time next year!

Demystifying Wedding Photography

I saw this on another photographers website/blog and I thought, even though one would imagine wedding photos to be self-explanatory...this might help fill in the gaps and explain why portfolios are a collection and not someone's entire wedding.

As I have found time and time again, better to over explain and sound boring, then leave room for misguided assumptions

That those 5-10 perfect moments we post on our blog the day after a wedding and the photos we share in our first meeting with a bride are our best work. I learned very quickly that my brides were expecting that level of perfection for every single photograph. Some were expecting me to do total magic and turn their fluorescent-lit, 1970’s carpeted town hall wedding into some sort of visual masterpiece. I don’t accept work if the venue is a shambles, by the way. Another perfectly good reason to turn down a wedding. Share with them the things about the album they’re looking at that made those photos some of your best. Tell them that the couple required no coaxing, pleading and begging to just ‘act natural’. Tell them that the location was carefully planned to take the photography into consideration. Tell them that the couple took your advice and didn’t place the head table smack in front of a gigantic window (also in my contract). Explain that you will also provide them with ‘regular’ pictures to record their day, their guests, their carefully planned details. But that perfect shot of the rings that took 10 minutes to style (it’s not easy hanging a diamond off a dew drop!) and then another 5 minutes to photograph will not be the norm for every one of their resulting 500 images.

Renee & Keith part 1

A little photo heavy for a blog post, but HOLY COW, I love how these photos turned out. And as soon as we scheduled this session, I knew it was going to kick butt.

Keith, our handsome groom to be, flies independently for fun. Quite the hobby, right. So during the initial consultation I had with them, I jokingly mentioned doing a session with his plane. Well with some creative input from his lovely fiancée Renee, we spent Sunday morning at the Commemorative Air Museum in Mesa (insert bonus point for living only 10min away).

After the better part of an hour and lots of breaking normal museum patron rules, we ended up with an awesome collection of photos. Keith was like a kid in a candy store picking out his favorite planes and really being a stud for the photos. And Renee with her brand new "flight attendant" sultry dress, was just inches away from being a modern day pin-up. Such a great looking, fun and fabulous couple.

Thank you Keith and Renee, your session was out of this world!

Natalie & Joe's Engagement

Natalie & Joe are the quintessential dram couple for a zealous photographer like myself. Both ridiculously good looking, crazy in love and eager and willing to have fun in their photos.

With all the time I spent with Dave in the hospital I had been researching some fresh new ideas to spice up my photos and had been playing with the idea of using props in my images. Apparently, there's a whole industry dedicated to cutesty props on etsy just for this sort of thing.

So balloons, frame, parasol and bubbles in tow, Natalie, Joe and I spent just about an hour playing at Historical Heritage Square and the results were nothing short of my best engagement session EVER!

Thank you Natalie and Joe, I can't even begin to tell you how excited I am about your December wedding and all the fun ideas I'm putting together for you wedding photos.
